From a "Horror House" to a New Beginning: Spanish Authorities Rescue German Children After Four Years
Children confined in "Nightmare Mansion" in Spain by German parents
In a shocking raid in Oviedo, Spain, police discovered three German children who had been kept in a filthy, rubbish-filled house for four long years by their parents. Javier Lozano, the operation's leader, expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "The officers were shocked—we've never seen a situation like this in Oviedo."
The parents, a 53-year-old German and a 48-year-old German-American, were arrested during a three-hour operation at a single-family house in Fitoria, on the outskirts of Oviedo. They currently stand accused of illegal detention, child neglect, and habitual psychological abuse.
Since the house was rented in October 2021, it's suspected that the children have never attended school or paid a visit to the doctor. Lozano shared, "There are clear indications of a crime," but refrained from prejudging the justice system.
An Unimaginable Scene
Upon the April 15 police raid, the children were dirty, in pajamas, and severely neglected. The house was covered in rubbish, even beneath the beds, and the officers discovered a sick cat amidst filth and excrement. The children, aged eight and ten, were forced to sleep in beds that were too small for them and were only allowed limited interaction for online orders.
Lozano emphasized that the children were isolated from the world, not even allowed outside to play in the garden. Initial reports claimed they touched the grass with a sense of awe as soon as they stepped outside, apparently never experiencing fresh air before. The children have since been moved to a care facility, with experts assessing their health, both physically and mentally, to determine the rescued youngsters' condition.
Looking Ahead
The trial of the parents is ongoing, with the accused currently in pretrial detention and their parental rights revoked. While specific updates on the trial proceedings are scarce, the focus shifts towards supporting the children's emotional recovery and preparing for the parents' trial. This heart-wrenching case underscores the dark consequences of extreme neglect and psychological abuse and draws attention to the importance of child welfare and protection worldwide.
