Child suffering from autism, aged 2, perishes following California's flash flood that carries away family vehicle, city authorities confirm
In a tragic incident that unfolded in Barstow, California, on Thursday evening, a 2-year-old boy named Xavier Padilla Aguilera was swept away by floodwaters. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time while Xavier was in a car with his father, 26-year-old Brandon Padilla Aguilera.
Xavier, who has autism and is nonverbal, was last seen wearing black pants, a black and white Nike shirt, and black and white Nike shoes. His aunt, Leanna, reported that Brandon Aguilera is currently swollen and has an infection from the water.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Xavier's aunt, Leanna, and Xavier's grandmother, Carolyn Tackett, shared that Xavier's father got out of the car, but their son doesn't know how to swim. He tried to rescue Xavier, but the boy went missing in the floodwaters.
Local law enforcement agencies, including the Barstow Police Department, and the California Department of Justice, have been actively involved in the search for Xavier. Volunteers have also joined the efforts, continuing the search even after police suspended it until daylight on Friday morning.
Carolyn Tackett, Xavier's grandmother, expressed her gratitude towards the Barstow community for their efforts in searching for Xavier. She mentioned that the community's support has made her love Barstow even more.
On Friday afternoon, it was reported that Xavier's body was found in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River. A city spokesperson extended deep condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
Brandon Aguilera was later found on an island created by the floodwaters. As responders were arriving at the scene, it was reported that the occupants had been separated from the vehicle and were continuing to travel with the floodwaters.
Carolyn Tackett also mentioned that her son had a funeral for their mother the previous day. She urged volunteers to bring bright lights and anything that could help in the search for Xavier on Friday morning.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Xavier Padilla Aguilera during this difficult time. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
