Car Accident in Trinity County: Infant Lost in River

Child reported missing presumed deceased following vehicular accident near a cliff in Northern California

On a fateful night in Trinity County, California, a family's life took an unexpected turn. Just before 1:35 a.m. on May 1, 2025, a tragic incident happened on State Route 299, about two miles east of Big Flat campground. A 21-year-old woman from Shasta Lake, driving a 2004 Lexus ES 330 with her 9-month-old infant in the backseat, lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the road, plunged down an embankment, and careened into the fast-flowing Trinity River.

The woman and her 19-year-old partner managed to extricate themselves from the sinking vehicle, sustaining minor to moderate injuries. Amidst the turmoil, the infant was swept away by the river's powerful current from the father's arms. As of now, search and rescue teams are tirelessly scouring the area for the little one, but he has yet to be found.

Keith Krick, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, shed light on the incident. He informed that despite drugs and alcohol not being considered factors in the crash, the investigation into the cause of the vehicle's loss of control is ongoing. At the time of the accident, the river, a popular spot for white water rafting, was flowing at over 3,480 cubic feet per second, making the rescue operation challenging and perilous.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk on our roads. Always remember to buckle up and drive safely. Stay tuned for updates on this heart-wrenching story.
