Boy accidentally falls through roof into sports venue, landing on a ball - Child plummets through a roof and lands within a gym setting

A 12-year-old boy from Bad Wurzach, Baden-Württemberg, was seriously injured on Saturday after falling through a skylight in a sports hall. The boy had been attempting to retrieve a football he had inadvertently kicked onto the roof.

Upon arrival at the scene, rescuers found the sports hall locked, and they were unable to reach the injured boy. A first aider, who was at the sports hall, attempted to break the glass of a door to gain access, but he too was unable to reach the boy and sustained minor injuries.

The boy's mother was treated by paramedics due to shock at the sports hall, and she was later transported to a clinic to be with her son. The first aider was also treated by paramedics for his injuries.

A doctor who attended to the boy reported that, despite his serious injuries, the boy was lucky considering the circumstances. The doctor transported the boy to a clinic by helicopter. It was reported that the boy had fallen approximately 13 feet and remained unconscious in a storage room.

The fire department arrived and unlocked the doors with a master key, and trained emergency responders conducted search and rescue operations to retrieve the boy. A qualified structural engineer assessed the integrity of the building before any re-entry for rescue or recovery operations.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety measures and emergency procedures in public assembly spaces. While there may not be a single comprehensive standard specifically for sports halls in a roof collapse scenario, general emergency planning and safety measures can be derived from Emergency Operations Plans and life safety glossaries.

These protocols aim to minimise risk to life and health, coordinate efficient rescue efforts, and ensure structural safety before any recovery or re-entry at sports halls or similar facilities affected by a roof collapse or related emergencies. They include immediate evacuation, accounting for all occupants, activating emergency alarms, establishing perimeters, restricting access, shutting off utilities, notifying emergency services, following an Emergency Operations Plan, providing first aid and medical assistance, and conducting regular emergency drills.

The specific sports hall location within Bad Wurzach was not specified. The authorities did not provide any updates on the boy's condition as of press time.
