Chihuahua battles a second winter storm with freezing sleet and snow
A second winter storm has swept across Chihuahua, bringing sleet, snow, and cold temperatures. Since early Monday, January 12, heavy rain, sleet, and snowfall have been reported in multiple regions, disrupting daily life. The storm began affecting the state overnight, with sleet recorded in Creel and Chihuahua City by dawn. Snow accumulated in the mountainous areas of Balleza and Guachochi, while rain and sleet spread across other municipalities. The heaviest rainfall was measured in Allende (21.8 mm), Santa Bárbara (21.2 mm), and San Francisco del Oro (18 mm). Unlike Sunday, when cities like Lago Azul, Cuauhtémoc, Ciudad Juárez, and Águilas saw clear skies and no snow, this storm has brought a sharp change. Temperatures today will struggle to rise above 5 to 8°C in Chihuahua City, Parral, Delicias, and Guachochi. Cold conditions are expected to linger for the rest of the day. Despite the weather, schools remain open, leaving parents to decide whether to send their children. Authorities have advised residents to follow Civil Protection guidelines to avoid accidents and stay safe. The storm’s impact continues, with freezing temperatures and wintry precipitation affecting travel and outdoor activities. Officials remind the public to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions as conditions remain hazardous.
