The Chicago White Sox have made two significant roster moves, reinstateing infielder Miguel Vargas from the 10-day injured list and calling up right-hander Yoendrys Gómez from Triple-A Charlotte.
Vargas, who was acquired from the Dodgers in a three-team trade last July, was sidelined due to a left oblique strain. Prior to his injury, he had played 106-107 games with a batting average around .227-.229, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 44 RBIs. In his return game against Detroit, Vargas walked twice and scored a run while batting sixth and playing first base.
Gómez, a 25-year-old right-hander, was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on May 10 and has been pitching for the Yankees and Dodgers this year before joining the White Sox. In the minor leagues with Charlotte, Gómez had a strong performance with a 4-3 record and a 2.12 ERA over 14 games (11 starts). In the major leagues, Gómez has a combined record near 2-1 and a higher ERA between 5.56 and 6.62 in 12-13 games, mostly in relief. However, in his first start for the White Sox in his 19th major league appearance, Gómez pitched five innings, struck out seven, and allowed one run and one hit.
