Drury DScales ChiSox: A Rollercoaster Journey with the White Sox
A Tumultuous Tenure
Chicago White Sox make under-the-radar acquisition of ex-Silver Slugger award winner
Veteran infielder Brandon Drury's whirlwind adventure with the Chicago White Sox has reached its conclusion, with the team releasing him from his minor league contract. This is the second time this season that the 32-year-old journey-man has parted ways with the ChiSox.
Drury found himself on the injured list since May 8, following a wrist injury from a hit-by-pitch while playing for Triple-A Charlotte. Charlotte manager Sergio Santos revealed to Future Sox last week that Drury had faced discomfort while swinging the bat, despite his ability to field without issue. Since April 26, the infielder has been noticeably absent, appearing in mere 10 games this season, posting a dismal .179/.319/.282 slash line with one home run over 47 plate appearances.
The White Sox Whiplash
Drury's wrist injury was just another hiccup in a long line of setbacks for the infielder, who initially signed a minor league deal with the White Sox ahead of spring training. A strong case for a spot in the big-league club during spring training was dashed when a broken left thumb two days before the season opener derailed his initial plans. Subsequently, Chicago granted him his release shortly afterward, only to re-sign him once he recovered.

Unfortunately, Drury's form never seemed to recover. Despite his promising spring, he floundered in his Triple-A comeback before another injury sidelined him once more.
Glitchy Glimpse of Greatness
While the current status of Drury's health is unclear, his track record still may prove attractive to teams in search of experienced infield reinforcements. He enjoyed a breakout year in 2022, earning a Silver Slugger award after slashing .263/.320/.492 with 28 homers and 87 RBIs, divided between the Reds and Padres. He followed that up with another solid season in 2023 for the Angels, hitting .262 with 26 home runs and 83 RBIs.
But, his productivity took a sharp dive last season as he batted merely .169/.242/.228 in 360 plate appearances. This limited interest in free agency, and he was forced to prove himself once more at the minor league level.
A Traumatic Twist: Injury and Recovery
Given his versatility, spanning all over the infield and some outfield positions, and his power potential, Drury could still be a valuable depth option for teams needing experienced infield help. However, until he regains his health and stays on the field consistently, the 10-year veteran may find his way back to the majors temporarily blocked by a web of injuries.
- Rumors hint that other clubs are interested in Brandon Drury, given his past performance and infield versatility, despite current injuries troubling his recent stint with the Chicago White Sox.
- With his minor league contract terminated by the White Sox, betting odds are unclear about Drury's potential trades to other MLB teams, needing experienced infield reinforcements.
- As Brandon Drury recovers from injuries, sports analysts are keeping a close eye on his odds of trading to another team in the MLB, given his previous productivity with teams like the Reds, Padres, and Angels.
