Chicago braces for Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm with massive preparations
A major snowstorm is set to hit the Chicago area over the Thanksgiving weekend. Authorities have begun preparations to keep roads and airports running as smoothly as possible.
The city of Chicago has stockpiled 400,000 tons of salt for snow clearing. Residents are reminded that the winter overnight parking ban begins on Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has pre-treated bridges, overpasses, and ramps to stop ice forming before the storm arrives.
Municipalities across the region have loaded their snow-fighting trucks with salt and assigned drivers to clear roads. In Tinley Park, Mayor Michael Glotz confirmed that 24 drivers will cover 12 routes to keep the village’s streets passable. Over 640 crew members will also work at O’Hare and Midway airports to maintain clear runways and taxiways.
Airlines are already taking precautions. United and American have issued travel waivers for passengers affected by the storm, warning of possible flight disruptions.
With heavy snow expected, road crews and airport staff are on standby. Travel delays remain likely, and residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts. The city’s preparations aim to reduce disruption during the busy holiday period.
