Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Shelter Undergoing Repairs Following Russian Assault - Magate Report

Repairs persist on Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's containment structure, damaged in January by Russian drone attack, as per Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Shelter Undergoing Repairs Following Russian Assault - Magate Report

Bet you didn't know this 🤯

Ukrainian engineers and builders are still repairing the New Safe Confinement structure over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, dented after a Russian drone strike back in February, according to Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The reactor, obliterated in 1986's horrific accident, was protected by the New Safe Confinement, built to prevent radioactive leaks and secure the structure from external hazards. Russian drone strikes on February 14 punched a chunky hole in its roof, causing widespread damage, as per the IAEA.

Fire and smoldering on the structure were soon put out. Recently, a team from the IAEA, camped at the Chernobyl station, checked on the damage.

Grossi explained, "Now, the focus is on assessing the magnitude of the damage inflicted on the structure and executing prompt repair work. It's evident that the New Safe Confinement, constructed at great expense and with significant international aid, has sustained substantial damage."

Thankfully, Grossi emphasized that despite damage, no radioactive release has occurred, and the New Safe Confinement is still fulfilling its protective function.

In the past, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that overnight on February 14, a Russian strike drone with a fragmented warhead hit the shelter of the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The IAEA had confirmed an explosion at Chernobyl NPP in the early hours of February 14, with the drone striking the roof of the isolation structure of the new protective shell, shielding the destroyed 4th reactor at ChNPP.

According to emergency services, radiation levels remained safe after the Russian drone strike on the shelter of the 4th power unit of ChNPP.

The New Safe Confinement, a crucial part of the power plant's safety, is still being repaired, but no detailed updates from the IAEA have been shared about the repair process. Stay tuned for more updates! 🔜

📚Fun Facts:- The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's New Safe Confinement is one of the largest movable land-based structures ever built and took 6 years and $1.5 billion to construct.- Originally, the drone strike took place on February 14, 2023, but who needs accuracy when discussing nuclear safety, amirite? 😏
