Chennai's Kalakki attracts four artists, each with their unique journey, creating a vibrant, heart-thumping stage

In the heart of the city, a production titled Kalakki is stirring up a storm, captivating audiences with its raw emotions and captivating performances. Presented by Vaanam Studios as an experience, not just entertainment, this play is a testament to the power of theatre.

Written and directed by performing arts practitioner Akash Madhi, Kalakki stages Pandit Ravi Shankar's life as a confluence of art forms. Akash, who teaches theatre, parai-attam, mime, clowning, and street play to kids and adults, has deeply shaped by this mix, intending to show how emotions collide, clash, and still complete us beautifully.

The play revolves around several significant characters, each embodied by talented actors. Chandia Saravanan, for instance, plays a character described as being furious like a lion and focused like a red wolf, embodying strength that comes from vulnerability. Her performance speaks with the fury of a community voice, resonating deeply with the audience. Chandia relates to the struggle and pain of a single mother in the play, as she has personally seen single mothers pushing hard for their families as sole providers without pause.

Sai Varsha Seetharaman connects most with the silent moments in the play that show her character's inner strength and vulnerability. Her character requires a balancing act of innocence and strength, which Sai portrays masterfully.

Cyril Veronis, a member of the Kalakki team, aims for the stage to feel intimate yet transformative. Sivaraman Ravi, another member, designs the set to shift moods quickly, acting as another character in the play.

Kiran Kumar, involved in the play, finds it a reminder of theatre's restless energy, reliving emotions every night and experiencing them differently each time. He mentions that the play has taught him consistency, while also encouraging him to look for fresh nuances in every performance, which sharpens discipline and strengthens emotional control.

Syed Hyder finds working with Akash Madhi on Kalakki keeps each scene alive and unpredictable, requiring him to stay present and grow as an actor and person.

Dharini Bala handles emcee duties for Kalakki.

Kalakki blends four stories that mirror the bittersweet chaos of life, featuring emotions such as joy, pain, nostalgia, love, and laughter. Akash Madhi believes that Kalakki revives the magic of street dramas, the joy of communal viewing, and the thrill of live, unfiltered emotions.

In essence, Kalakki is an invitation to experience truths that may be avoided, offering a means of both escape and reflection. It aims to feel unforgettable, as people are giving their Saturday evening instead of a movie or outing. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Kalakki.
