Rats in Saxony's Cities - Waste as Main Cause - Chemnitz Launches Rat Reporting System Amid Stable Populations in Saxony Cities

Chemnitz residents can now report rat sightings directly to the city. Despite no current rat problem, the city wants to stay vigilant. Meanwhile, in Leipzig and Dresden, rat populations are stable but improper waste disposal remains a challenge.

Chemnitz has introduced a new system for residents to report rat sightings. They can call a dedicated phone number or use the city's public issue reporting system. This move comes despite no reported rat problem in the city, with case numbers remaining stable and no specific neighborhoods affected.

In Leipzig, rats are considered part of the 'normal urban landscape'. Neighborhoods like Paunsdorf and Grünau have higher numbers of cases, but the overall population is stable. Property owners in Leipzig are legally required to take action if they have a rat infestation, facing penalties for non-compliance. In Dresden, the rat population is also stable, with inspections conducted in response to reports. However, improper disposal of food waste is a major challenge in both cities, attracting rats to urban areas. While Zwickau has implemented measures like warning signs against feeding ducks to reduce the rat population, Leipzig and Dresden have not reported similar comprehensive actions.

Chemnitz's new rat reporting system aims to keep the city rat-free. While Leipzig and Dresden have stable rat populations, all three cities face challenges with improper waste disposal. Residents and property owners are urged to play their part in managing these issues.
