Chelyabinsk Oblast faces prolonged air pollution due to weather inversion
Unfavourable weather conditions in Chelyabinsk Oblast are expected to last until April 1, 2023. The situation has led authorities to issue health and safety advice for residents, as pollutants remain trapped near ground level. The current weather pattern creates a temperature inversion, preventing pollutants from dispersing. This leads to a buildup of harmful substances in the air, affecting breathing and overall health.
Emergency services have advised residents to avoid activities that produce smoke, dust, or strong odours. Lighting bonfires is strongly discouraged during this period. People are also urged to reduce physical exertion and wear clothing made from natural fabrics. To stay hydrated, drinking alkaline mineral water or fermented dairy products is recommended. Fresh juices and oxygen-protein cocktails may also help, while carbonated drinks should be avoided. Taking contrast showers and cutting out alcohol are additional suggestions for maintaining well-being. Those experiencing persistent shortness of breath, coughing, or insomnia are advised to seek immediate medical attention. Public transport use is encouraged to minimise private vehicle emissions, further reducing air pollution. While air quality in the region has improved moderately since 2020—with PM2.5 levels dropping from around 25 µg/m³ to 18 µg/m³—episodic spikes from metallurgical plants still occur under similar meteorological conditions.
The unfavourable conditions will remain until early April, requiring residents to follow precautions. Authorities continue monitoring air quality and advising on measures to reduce health risks during this period.
