Chelsea's £262m loss shatters Premier League financial records

Chelsea have reported the largest annual financial loss in Premier League history. The club's accounts show a £262 million deficit for the latest financial year. Despite this, their revenue rose to £491 million, marking the second-highest income in their history.

The losses come under the ownership of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium, which has now overseen over £420 million in deficits across three years. Meanwhile, on-field success, including victories in the Conference League and Club World Cup, helped boost earnings. The £262 million loss surpasses the previous record of £197 million, set by Manchester City in the 2010-11 season. Chelsea now hold four of the six biggest financial losses in Premier League history. The club's revenue growth was partly driven by trophy wins, including the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2024.

Chelsea Women also played a role in the financial picture. Their revenue nearly doubled to £21 million, thanks to commercial deals and a record £3 million in matchday income. This success followed their domestic treble victory. However, the women's team still recorded a £17 million loss in their first year operating independently from the men's side.

Financial details for Manchester City's losses between 2010-11 and the 2008 takeover by City Football Group remain unclear. Unlike Chelsea, no specific figures for those years have been publicly confirmed. Chelsea's record-breaking loss stands at £262 million, despite strong revenue growth. The club's on-field achievements, including silverware and rising commercial income, have not yet offset the financial strain. Under Boehly's ownership, the total deficit now exceeds £420 million over three years.
