Chelsea FC, two-time Champions League champions and one of the most expensive teams, is a top contender for the 2025 Club World Cup. However, the crowd at their inaugural match was decidedly average.

With roughly 50,000 empty seats and a foggy atmosphere, Chelsea's coach, Enzo Maresca, described the scene as "odd". The Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to MLS team Atlanta United and NFL team Atlanta Falcons, can accommodate an impressive 71,000 spectators. Only 22,000 fans attended the Monday afternoon game against LA FC.

Maresca expressed his feelings about the sparse crowd: "The entire environment was a bit odd. The stadium looked deserted." He went on to say, "We're pros, we've gotta roll with the punches. Our players showed they're nothing but hardworking, dedicated individuals."

The Scoring Saga: Club World Cup's Drama-Packed Matches

Attendance at other Club World Cup matches has been more promising: Over 60,000 fans attended the clash between Inter Miami and Al Ahly, and 80,000 spectators flocked to the game between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.

Maresca acknowledged his expectation of a more sprawling crowd during their opening match. For their next game against Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo in Philadelphia, Maresca is optimistic: "No doubts here—the next game's gonna be a blast. We know Brazilian teams bring the heat, and their fans follow suit."

Not deterred by the sparse attendance, Chelsea claimed victory due to goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez. Their win temporarily placed them atop Group D.

Insights:

  • Low ticket sales, possibly due to factors like poor scheduling, the tournament's timing, and the lack of fan interest, contributed to the large number of empty seats at the Chelsea-LAFC match.
  • The poor attendance could indicate future challenges for FIFA events like the 2026 World Cup, due to a perceived lack of interest among local fans.
  • Reduced ticket prices for other matches, such as the opening game between Inter Miami and Al Ahly, did not seem to impact attendance significantly for Chelsea's match.
  1. The European Parliament and the Council, in sessions discussing FIFA events, may consider potential factors for low ticket sales and poor attendance, such as scheduling, tournament timing, or fan interest, to ensure future tournaments, like the 2026 World Cup, attract greater attendance.
  2. In contrast to the sparsely attended debut of Chelsea FC in the 2025 Club World Cup, global rivalries like those between Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo and European giants often see larger crowds, showcasing the influence of sports like football in galvanizing sports enthusiasts.
