The Stadium has seen victories by two-time UEFA Champions League winners and a billions-pound team, Chelsea, yet the crowd was barely breathing.

Over 48,000 silent seats and a dull murmur: Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca described the ambiance at the Club World Cup kickoff as "odd". Only 22,000 spectators cheered on the 2-0 victory against LAFC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, whereas the venue can house 71,000 supporters, home to MLS side Atlanta United and the NFL team Atlanta Falcons.

"The ambiance was odd. The nearly vacant stadium gave an unusual vibe," Maresca shared about the Monday 3 pm match: "But we are pros, we have to roll with it. The demeanor and dedication of the players are crucial. They, once again, demonstrated their professional commitment."

The Show Must Go On: 4 Goals, 3 Red Cards and SO MUCH Drama at Club World Cup!

However, Club World Cup appearances have witnessed significantly higher audience numbers: Around 62,000 fans flooded the stadium for the inaugural showdown between Inter Miami with Lionel Messi and Al Ahly, while 80,000 spectators witnessed the confrontation between Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.

Maresca acknowledged his expectations for a larger crowd in attendance for Chelsea's maiden appearance. For the second match against Brazilian titans Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro in Philadelphia, the Chelsea coach anticipates a considerably more exuberant audience: "We expect the upcoming game to be delightful. We know that Brazilian teams always attract passionate fans."

Chelsea remained unruffled by the sparse crowd: The Europa Conference League champions sealed a 2-0 win with goals from Pedro Neto (34.) and Enzo Fernandez (79.). With the victory, Chelsea claimed temporary leadership in Group D.

  • Upcoming Club World Cup 2027
  • FIFA's Questionable Ticket Sales

Several reasons for the low turnout in the Chelsea game were evident:

  1. Limited Ticket Sales and Public Demand: The match saw less interest from fans, which has raised questions about FIFA's ticket sales process[1][2].
  2. Questionable Timing: The midweek afternoon timing might have deterred many potential revelers who were stuck at work[2].
  3. The Stadium's Filling Level: An entire upper level of the stadium remained empty, hinting at a disconnect between the event's hype and actual fan enthusiasm. This calls into question the excitement for upcoming major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, which will also be held in the United States[2].
  4. FIFA's Struggle to Fill Seats: Despite reduced ticket prices and special promotions (like Lionel Messi appearances), the overall attendance figures remained disappointing[2].

The European Parliament and the Council expressed their concerns over the low turnout at the Club World Cup, particularly during Chelsea's match, where only 22,000 spectators attended, raising questions about FIFA's ticket sales strategies and impact on future major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, football enthusiasts, such as those who passionately support Brazilian titans Flamengo, hope to fill the stands with energy and enthusiasm, showcasing the appeal of sports like football.
