Chelsea confirms arrival of Gittens

Jamie Gittens, the highly-touted England Under-21 international winger, has completed a high-profile transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea in July 2025. The deal, worth an initial £48.5 million with additional performance-related add-ons of £3.5 million, will see Gittens at Stamford Bridge until June 2032.

The agreement was confirmed ahead of the Club World Cup quarter-finals, with Gittens in attendance for Chelsea's 2-1 quarter-final win over Palmeiras on Friday. However, he will be ineligible for Chelsea's semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday, as the transfer was completed after the tournament began.

Lars Ricken, Dortmund's chief executive, confirmed the deal, stating that the club had agreed to let Gittens join Chelsea to further his career. Gittens himself expressed his excitement about joining the Blues, calling it a great feeling to join such a big club.

Gittens, who is a product of Manchester City's academy, had a notable recent season at Dortmund, scoring 12 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, including four in the Champions League. He also created 21 chances and attempted 160 dribbles in the 2024-25 Bundesliga, both team-high figures for Dortmund.

Chelsea secured Gittens to strengthen their forward options, particularly on the wings, following their decision not to make Jadon Sancho’s loan permanent. The deal was agreed during the Club World Cup held in the United States, with final salary details still being settled at the time of announcement.

The deal marks a significant investment by Chelsea in this young talent, reflecting their long-term strategy. The total transfer fee could increase to £55m with the addition of performance-related add-ons. Gittens' competitive debut for Chelsea could come against Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Chelsea announced the completion of the deal on their club website, but have yet to reveal Gittens' shirt number. The 20-year-old will be eager to make an impact at his new club and continue his impressive rise in the footballing world.
