Chelsea clinches the European Cup victory
FC Chelsea clinched the historic achievement of becoming the first club to win all five major European club competitions after defeating Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final with a score of 4-1 at Stadion Wrocław, Poland.
The English Premier League team previously secured victories in the Champions League (2012 and 2021), Europa League (2013 and 2019), the European Cup Winners' Cup (1971 and 1998), and the UEFA Super Cup (1998 and 2021). This remarkable triumph marks a significant milestone in European football history.
Sevilla initially dominating the match, taking an early lead through Abde Ezzalzouli in the 9th minute. Despite remaining the superior team for much of the first half, Sevilla failed to maintain their advantage after the break. Chelsea capitalized on their improved performance after halftime, scoring four unanswered goals courtesy of Enzo Fernández (65'), Nicolas Jackson (70'), Jadon Sancho (83'), and Moisés Caicedo (90+1).
The final loss of Sevilla in Polish Breslau also marked an end to an impressive Spanish streak. Since the 2001/02 season, there had been no final involving a Spanish team in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League that did not result in a Spanish team's victory.
Violence had erupted on the streets of Breslau prior to the match, prompting police to mobilize stun grenades and water cannons against inciting English and Spanish fans. More than 20 individuals were apprehended, and isolated instances of violence were reported on Tuesday. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed firm opposition to on-street violence, praising the police for their quick response against hooligans wearing Chelsea and Betis jerseys, and stating that they would act even more resolutely if necessary.
