Chechen officials reprimand singer Alla Pugachyova for her comments regarding Dzhokhar Dudaev

In a recent interview, Russian singer Alla Pugachyova made comments about Dzhokhar Dudaev, the first president of the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Her remarks have sparked a heated response from the Chechen Republic's leadership, led by Ramzan Kadyrov, and the region's Minister for National Policy, Akhmed Dudaev (no relation to Dzhokhar Dudaev).

Pugachyova described Dzhokhar Dudaev as a decent, respectable, intelligent, and handsome man. However, these comments have been met with strong criticism. Kadyrov, the Chechen Head, called Pugachyova an 'enemy of the people and a traitor', and accused her of justifying the 'actions of a terrorist'.

Akhmed Dudaev responded to Pugachyova's words in a video message, stating that she and other 'provocateurs who fled Russia' would be held accountable for their words. Pro-Kremlin political analysts have called for a criminal case under the article on justification of terrorism.

The interview, published on 10 September, was the trigger for the sharp criticism from the Chechen Republic's leadership. Pugachyova's comments were also criticised for allegedly insulting the memory of the approximately 300,000 people who died in the two Chechen wars and the entire Chechen people.

Notably, Pugachyova admitted feeling guilt towards Dudaev's widow, Alla, whom she was unable to help at a difficult time. In response, Aleksandr Treshchyov, a lawyer and veteran of the Afghan war, filed a complaint with the court for 'insulting combat veterans'.

The lawsuit filed by Treshchyov has not yet been accepted for consideration. No comment has been made by the Kremlin regarding Pugachyova's interview. It is unclear at this time what, if any, consequences Pugachyova may face for her comments.

Pugachyova's interview with journalist Yekaterina Gordeeva on YouTube has gathered millions of views, indicating a high level of public interest in the controversy.
