Last week, Champlin Park High School took home the state champion trophy in the girls' high school softball tournament. But sitting in the stands, you couldn't shake off the elephant in the room.
Marissa Rothenberger, a trans-identifying athlete who was born Charlie Dean, steered the team to victory, pitching three complete games in the tournament and earning All-Tournament team honors.
Under current Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) policy, athletes can compete based on self-identified gender, regardless of biological sex. But this has stirred controversy among parents, coaches, and athletes who question the playing field's fairness.
Before showing its true colors, longtime Minnesota-based pitching coach Kent Reed trained Rothenberger, albeit unaware of the pitcher's biological sex. At first, he considered Marissa an awkward kid. But as Rothenberger grew into a 6-foot tall player throwing consistent shutouts, the difference became apparent.
"When you have the levers and you're really tall, you can throw pretty hard," Reed told our website. "Boys have a more different muscle structure - more fast-twitch muscles - and there are girls that have that too, but they're not the same."
"They're always stronger, faster," he continued. "Bone structure and such. They will dominate."
Reed also expressed concern about the MSHSL's policy, which he believes supports male athletes competing in girls' sports and silences dissent.
"If somebody like that was throwing 65, 70 mph, it would be devastating," he said.
Several parents and club coaches, fearing backlash, lost tournament eligibility, or club sanctions, refused to openly discuss their concerns during the tournament. A dad even pointed Reed to "the other side" when he asked about Rothenberger.
"Everybody's got to be PC," Reed said. "People are scared. If you have a business, your business could suffer."
Rothenberger isn't the only trans-identifying athlete causing a stir in girl's sports. Last year, another trans player took championships away from competing teams in California, causing protests and legal challenges. Such incidents have fueled debates about fairness, equity, and the genuine impact on the legitimacy of women's sports.
