Chase for Champions League spot remains tight as Tielemans continues to propel Aston Villa
In the nail-biting chase for a top-five finish in the Premier League, Unai Emery's Aston Villa desperately needed a win at Villa Park. With just three matches left on the line, their clash against Marco Silva's Fulham was as crucial as it gets.
After Tielemans' first-half strike that leveled Villa's points with Chelsea and Nottingham Forest (63 and 60 points respectively, having played 35 and 34 games respectively), Villa finds itself in a tight race. As for Fulham, they remain in the relegation battle.
Villa's hero of the day, Tielemans, kept their European hopes alive, navigating past a dismal display in their 3-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend. Despite the unsettling void left by Marcus Rashford's hamstring injury, Villa pressed on.
Without Rashford, Ollie Watkins resumed his role as Villa's center-forward. Watkins had expressed his anger at being relegated to a substitute role in Villa's Champions League quarter-final loss against Paris Saint-Germain. A golden opportunity nearly allowed Watkins to make amends, but his header missed the target.
After a powerful header by Tielemans in the seventh minute that put Villa ahead, the game heated up. Villa appealed for a penalty after Watkins tumbled under Antonee Robinson's shoulder barge. But hope was short-lived as Raul Jimenez couldn't quite manage the finishing touch on Sasa Lukic's free-kick.
As Fulham threatened for the first time, Jimenez came close again, curling a shot from distance just before the interval. Villa nearly paid for their misses as they were kept on their toes in the second half. Ryan Sessegnon thought he had equalized with a close-range effort, but VAR intervened to disallow it for offside.
Harry Wilson squandered a golden opportunity, while Leno denied Watkins with a smart save from the striker's snap-shot. Despite their discomfort, Cash's superb goal-line clearance ensured Villa kept out Joachim Andersen's close-range effort.
In the dying moments of the match, Donyell Malen drilled against the crossbar, but Villa held on, keeping their Champions League dreams alive.
With each team in the top five having at least one game in hand, the race for Europe's elite club competition next season remains wide open.
As things stand, two points separate Aston Villa (7th, 60 points) from Chelsea and Nottingham Forest (5th and 6th, 63 points respectively). The top four spots are occupied by Arsenal (2nd, 67 points) and Newcastle United (4th, 63 points)[5].
