Charley Hull's Legend Grows as she Switches Traditional Smoking to Nicotine Pouches
Charley Hull, the No. 14-ranked LPGA player, has swapped her cigarette habit for a different nicotine fix this year. The English golfer gained attention during the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open, as she was seen signing autographs while puffing on a vape, a.k.a. ripping a heater. Since then, Charley has amassed a good following and continued to use cigarettes during play throughout the 2024 season, but recently shared on social media her intention to stay clear of cigarettes in the new year.
She made quite the impression during this week's Black Désert Championshi͏n͏h͏i͏p in Ut— just in a different way. Charley revealed that she’s kept her promise and stayed away from cigarettes, but she’s not completely nicotine-free. Instead, she’s opted for a nicotine pouch she places in her upper lip, a trendy on-trend option the kids call an “upper-decker.”
So far, so good.
Charley tells us that she finds it incredibly easy to quit cigarettes this way. “I think it's the easiest thing I've ever done in my life,” she said to Golfweek.” Yeah, it's pretty, pretty, pretty easy,” she emphasized. “I’m a strong-minded person, usually when I put my head and my mind to it, I can do it.”
But Charley’s statement might have a bit of an asterisk.
Just like many folks who quit smoking cigarettes, Charley hasn't quit nicotine cold turkey. Instead, she's chosen nicotine gum or a patch, but she's opted for a nicotine pouch. It’s a tobacco-free brand called Nordic Spirit, and Charley has been spotted using these pouches in Utah this week.
One wonders if Charley has experimented with Zyns, another popular brand of nicotine pouch. Anyone who knows Charley and her decisions will understand that this is a highly likely possibility.
While nicotine pouches may offer reduced harm compared to cigarettes for former smokers, they still carry health risks, including oral health issues, nicotine addiction, cardiovascular stress, and developmental harm. Research gaps remain regarding their prolonged use, particularly cancer risk and oral pathology progression, but current evidence suggests reduced harm relative to cigarettes. Users switching from cigarettes should monitor for oral lesions and consider FDA-approved cessation methods if seeking to quit nicotine entirely.
