Charitable organization, Habitat for Humanity, provides aid to a secluded Native American tribe situated within the heart of the Grand Canyon.

In a remarkable show of support, Habitat for Humanity has stepped in to help the Havasupai Tribe, a Native American community residing deep within the Grand Canyon, rebuild their homes affected by severe weather.

The Havasupai Tribe, who have called the Grand Canyon home for hundreds of years, have faced recurring threats from natural disasters such as floods and fires[3][4]. These catastrophes have left many of their homes in ruins, with some completely burned due to the fires[6]. The cost of rebuilding these homes is estimated to be a million dollars, a figure that the tribe cannot afford[9].

Recognising the urgency of the situation, Habitat for Humanity has provided critical assistance to the Havasupai Tribe[1]. Volunteers from the organisation completed one of their most challenging builds in the remote Havasupai village, overcoming the logistical challenges of delivering building materials to this difficult-to-access area[7].

The Havasupai village, typically off-limits to cameras, granted reporter Jared Dillingham rare access to document this significant project[1][8]. The rebuilt homes are a testament to the resilience of the Havasupai Tribe and the power of community support in times of adversity.

The Havasupai Tribe, whose ancestors have lived in the Grand Canyon for centuries, have faced environmental challenges such as climate-change related weather events like floods and fires, which have caused extensive damage to their homes[3][4]. Science plays a crucial role in weather-forecasting and understanding the impact of climate change on the environment, potentially offering insights to prevent future disasters in the Havasupai village. The Havasupai Tribe has a deep connection with sports, such as hiking and basketball, which have been a source of connection and community within the remote village[5].
