In the latest addition to the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, viewers are treated to earlier versions of several characters from the original series, Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), and other related media.

At the helm is Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), who served as the captain of the USS Enterprise before Captain James T. Kirk in TOS. By his side is Science Officer and First Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), a character familiar to many as the son of Amanda Grayson. Spock's human mother, Amanda (Mia Kirshner), also makes an appearance in the series.

Number One, originally known only as "Number One" in TOS, is portrayed as Pike's first officer in Strange New Worlds. Her character, Una Chin-Riley, is identified as Illyrian in the series' canon. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (Martin Quinn) also joins the crew, depicted as a younger and less experienced engineer compared to his TOS counterpart.

Extradimensional beings Q (voiced by John de Lancie) and Trelane (Rhys Darby) also make appearances, reprising their roles from TOS and its descendants.

The series isn't just limited to TOS characters, as it also features cameos from characters from other modern Star Trek media, such as those from Star Trek: Lower Decks (Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, Sam Rutherford, Jack Ransom).

While many beloved TOS characters such as Dr. Leonard McCoy and Hikaru Sulu have yet to appear, they are expected to join the cast in future seasons. New characters created solely for Strange New Worlds include La’An Noonien Singh and others who do not appear in TOS.

Other notable cast members include Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M’Benga, André Dae Kim as Chief Kyle, and Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel. Rhys Darby plays Q's mischievous son, who is confirmed to be Trelane, while Roderick McNeil portrays Stonn, T'Pring's colleague at the Ankeshtan K'til criminal rehabilitation facility.

Paul Wesley plays a younger version of Captain James T. Kirk, and Celia Rose Gooding portrays Ensign Nyota Uhura, a character who pre-dated most of her Original Series colleagues on the bridge. Anson Mount reprises his role as Captain Christopher Pike from the original unaired pilot, The Cage.

In an interesting twist, Sybok, Spock's rebellious half-brother, is a prisoner at Ankeshtan K'til, and T'Pring, Spock's future fiancée, is engaged but on a break while he explores his options with Christine Chapel. Cillian O'Sullivan plays Dr. Roger Korby, who transferred his essence into an android body in the Original Series episode What are Little Girls Made Of?

Adrian Holmes portrays Admiral Robert April, and Matthew MacFadzean plays the same noble Romulan commander in the alternative timeline of A Quality of Mercy. Lastly, Carol Marcus is mentioned by Jim Kirk in the musical episode Subour website Rhapsody, but has not yet appeared in Strange New Worlds.

Desmond Sivan plays a younger version of Khan Noonien Singh, promising an intriguing exploration of this iconic character's past.
