Chaotic Storm in Munich Stops Subway Escalators - Revealed detailed events behind the incident
In the heart of Germany, Munich experienced a severe thunderstorm on August 16th, which had consequences for the city's U-Bahn riders. The storm was one of the stormiest nights in recent memory, with over 4,400 lightning strikes reported in Bavaria.
The thunderstorm caused a brief power dip in Munich's overarching power grid, leading to a malfunction of all escalators in the U-Bahn system. The Munich public transportation authority (MVG) announced this disruption around 9 am on Saturday.
Wolfgang Schulz, CEO of Aldis, described the stormy night as one of the stormiest he had ever witnessed. The MVG, responsible for Munich's U-Bahn system, explained that the malfunction was due to a lightning strike.
Despite the disruption, the MVG worked diligently to restore the escalators. By 4 pm and 9 pm on Saturday, they had managed to restore approximately 80 escalators, with around 200 reportedly turning back on by themselves.
Fortunately, the elevators in Munich's U-Bahn remained unaffected, ensuring barrier-free access to the stations. The weather in Munich has since calmed down, providing relief to both the city and its transportation system.
For those seeking more detailed or official information about the Munich U-Bahn during severe thunderstorms, it may be best to consult the MVG or local news sources for updates following such weather events.
