Chaotic E3: Debuts of The Last Guardian Remaster, Final Fantasy VII Update, and Shenmue III Crowdfunding Campaign
Unbelievable Shockwaves at Sony's E3 Briefing!
The three least anticipated game announcements rocked the gaming world during Sony's E3 conference this year. Here's what went down!
You know it's a stellar E3 when we're least expecting new gameplay footage of The Last Guardian, six years in the making, and it's only the third craziest thing coming out of Sony's presentation.
One standout aspect was the presence of Fumito Ueda, the mastermind behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, who's surprising return to the project was hinted, despite his departure from Sony to work as a freelancer. However, the developer's current studio affiliation remains a mystery under the name unknown studio gen DESIGN, not Team Ico.
The resemblance in the new footage to the 2009 version suggests that the game has not undergone any major gameplay overhaul, despite rumors to the contrary. For now, the game's December 2016 release date is set in stone, but whether Ueda's presence is a permanent one remains a mystery.
In a surprising turn of events, Square Enix finally announced their long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy VII. Despite hinting at a tech demo back in 2005 during the PlayStation 3 unveiling, the remake seemed unlikely. But here we are! While specifics are scarce, the PlayStation 4 will enjoy a timed exclusive, with Yoshinori Kitase producing, Kazushige Nojima scenario designing, and Tetsuya Nomura directing.
And, yes, you heard it right! The unthinkable has happened – Shenmue III is stepping out of the shadows, thanks to a Kickstarter campaign launched by Sony, boasting a relatively modest $2 million goal that seems nearly assured, considering it's almost at $1 million, within an hour of its launch.
Though Shenmue once held the title of the most expensive video game ever made, with a budget of over $70 million, Sony seems to be stepping in to shoulder some of the financial burden, beyond the Kickstarter funds. The game is expected to release on PlayStation 4 and PC in December 2017.
