Chaos in Cairo: Zamalek Fans Riot During Africa Champions League Match
Chaos erupted at Cairo Stadium during an Africa Champions League match between Zamalek and Club Africain. Zamalek fans rioted following a referee's decision, leading to significant damage and injuries.
The match was intense, with Zamalek leading 2 to 1 when the riots began. Fans stormed the pitch, damaging the playing field and grandstands. They also targeted police vehicles, causing extensive damage. Several fans were arrested, and both teams' players and supporters were safely evacuated.
In Tunisia, during a home game for Club Africain on 21 March, fans invaded the pitch while their team was leading 4 to 2. This incident, along with the one in Cairo, highlights the growing issue of fan unrest in African football. The injured, including fans, security officers, and players, are in stable condition.
The Ministry of Interior has called for action against unruly fans to prevent future violence. The DFB has implemented measures to manage fan behavior and avoid repeat incidents. Nine people were injured in the Cairo riots, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked fan aggression.
