Chaos erupts in Gaza as at least two people die in a rush to a UN warehouse

In Gaza, two individuals lost their lives and numerous others were injured on Wednesday when a crowd attempt to storm a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse, prompted by an 11-week long blockade of humanitarian aid by Israel that has led to the region teetering on the edge of famine.

A large crowd surged towards the facility, aiming to gather food aid supplies, as scenes of people exiting the building with heavy bags of flour unfolded. The cost of a kilogram of flour has skyrocketed to approximately $70 (€62.2), while a full bag can go for up to $500 (€444.2), according to eyewitness accounts.

The WFP expressed grave concern, highlighting the rapidly deteriorating conditions in Gaza due to the complete embargo on all food assistance and other aid into the region for 80 days. The organization firmly underlined the escalating humanitarian needs and the threats posed by restricting life-saving aid to the desperate populace of Gaza.

The chaos erupted a day after a violent clash ensued at another aid centre when a crowd of hungry Palestinians overpowered the security forces, resulting in the tragic death of at least one person and injuring 48 others. Israeli forces attempted to restore order by employing warning shots.

The contested US-backed aid distribution system has come under heavy criticism from the UN and other organizations, who have refused to collaborate with the scheme, citing concerns about its effectiveness and alignment with humanitarian principles.

John Whittall, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the West Bank and Gaza, voiced his concerns at a press briefing on Wednesday, stating that the system runs counter to humanitarian principles by using aid as a tool for population control, potentially causing deprivation among the local population.

Israel argues that the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas militants from procuring aid and exploiting it for their own gain. However, the UN has denied widespread occurrence of such incidents.

The UN has already expressed fears about the capacity of the new aid distribution system to meet the needs of over 2 million people residing in the Gaza Strip. The system's founding director, Jake Wood, resigned earlier this week, stating that adhering to humanitarian principles would be impossible while simultaneously delivering aid under the current system.

  1. The escalating situation in Gaza, marked by war-and-conflicts, politics, and general-news, is further complicated by the ongoing blockade and distribution system, which raises concerns about crime-and-justice and accidents due to the volatile crowd behavior at aid centers.
  2. In the face of the humanitarian crisis, organizations like the UN and the WFP have voiced concerns about the recent aid distribution system, criticizing its alignment with humanitarian principles and potential impact on the population, citing issues such as population control and possible hyperinflation of essential goods like flour.
