Chaos ensues in Rajya Sabha following inappropriate statement by Kharge
There was an uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, following an unparliamentary remark by the Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge. The incident occurred during a heated discussion on Operation Sindoor and related security issues.
Kharge, in a strong accusation, called the ruling BJP party "gaddar" (traitors), criticizing the government’s handling of terrorism and national security lapses. His remarks were aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for alleged failures in responding to terror attacks, such as the Pahalgam attack, and for not attending an all-party meet, instead focusing on election campaigning. Kharge also questioned the government’s sincerity and accountability, citing statements by Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha about security breaches.
Union Minister and Leader of the House, JP Nadda, responded by saying Kharge had "lost his mental balance" due to emotional distress. This led to an uproar in the House. Nadda subsequently withdrew his "mental balance" comment and apologized to Kharge, asking for both the words "gaddar" and his own remarks to be expunged from the official proceedings. Nadda clarified that he respected Kharge as a senior leader and recognized the intensity of the political debate but stressed the need for maintaining decorum.
The episode highlighted existing political and regional divides. Kharge’s criticism targeted the government’s policy failures in Jammu and Kashmir, accusing it of negligence in border security and handling terror threats, reflecting ongoing regional tensions. His remarks reflected opposition frustration with the central government’s approach towards Kashmir and the broader national security framework, fueling parliamentary discord. The exchange underscored the polarized political environment between the BJP-led government and the Congress opposition in India's upper house, especially on sensitive issues like terrorism, sovereignty, and governance.
Meanwhile, opposition MPs gave notices under rule 267 seeking that the listed business of the day be set aside to take up a discussion on the concerns of southern states over the impending delimitation exercise. However, these notices were rejected by the Chair for not adhering to the rules.
As the Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till noon, Uddhav, not mentioned in the text, is planning to lead protests against the erstwhile Shinde Government, but this information is not directly related to the uproar in the Rajya Sabha.
