Channel confession by Santi Cañizares, who discusses the passing of his son: "I understand it's not the final chapter"

In a poignant conversation on Friday's 'Herrera in COPE', former Spanish footballer Santiago Cañizares shared intimate details about his personal life, particularly the loss of his young son in 2018 after a prolonged illness.

Cañizares, who currently works in the media, spoke candidly about the difficult times he has faced since his son's passing. He revealed that during challenging moments, he often finds himself seeking comfort and guidance from his son, whom he deeply misses.

The football legend also spoke about his relationship with his family, including his mother who passed away in 2024. In a touching moment, he referred to his mother as "grandma" and mentioned that she had accompanied his son in his final journey.

Cañizares's family life has undergone significant changes in recent years. He got divorced from his wife Mayte García in 2021, and they share triplets named India, Martina, and Santi, born in 2013. His father, now 86 years old, is also grappling with the grieving process, having spent a lifetime with his wife.

Despite the grief and hardships, Cañizares finds solace in the belief that death is not the end. He expressed that he still feels his son's presence and believes that his son's teachings continue to guide him.

In a heartwarming anecdote, Cañizares recalled a moment from his son's school days when his son once said, "I didn't come to learn, but to teach." This statement, he said, resonates deeply with him even today.

Cañizares's son's illness lasted for a year and a half, during which he displayed remarkable courage and wisdom beyond his years. At a young age, he had predicted that he would be "here very briefly."

Santiago Cañizares is a recognised figure in Spanish football, having played for several prominent teams during his career. Despite his public persona, he has always been known for his private and reserved nature. His recent openness about his personal struggles serves as a testament to the strength and resilience he has shown in the face of adversity.
