Updating the Rail Game in Franconia and Upper Palatinate

Get ready for improved connectivity as rail services in Upper Franconia, the Upper Palatinate, and eastern Middle Franconia undergo a significant overhaul. The Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) has unveiled its plans, which include more frequent runs and newer, accessibility-friendly trains starting December 10.

Nuremberg-Bamberg Express

Bamberg's most popular rail route between Nuremberg and Bamberg will witness an upgrade with the deployment of modern, more spacious Siemens Desiro HC trains. This half-hourly Siemens Desiro HC service will extend past Bamberg to Thuringia, offering more comfortable, barrier-free travel options.

Additionally, intense, frequent S-Bahn Line 1 services will be launched between Nuremberg and Bamberg, equipping Forchheim with a 20-minute interval in the direction of Erlangen and Nuremberg. Sadly, the Nuremberg-Bamberg line will undergo maintenance delays, pushing back the improvements until December 17.

Enhanced connections in Upper Palatinate

The Nuremberg-Amberg-Schwandorf and Nuremberg-Weiden-Neustadt/Waldnaab routes will see continual operations until midnight, strengthening the ties between Nuremberg and the northern and eastern portions of the Upper Palatinate.

Siemens Desiro HC on Nuremberg-Würzburg and Lichtenfels-Coburg-Sonneberg lines

Commencing December 10, the Siemens Desiro HC trains will also service the Bamberg-Schweinfurt-Würzburg and Lichtenfels-Coburg-Sonneberg lines.

However, the delay in rail services between Nuremberg and Bamberg will cause temporary inconvenience to the independent town of Coburg on the Thuringia border. As a result, direct service to Bayreuth via Lichtenfels will be unavailable until June 2024.

Central France connections

The improvements to rail services in Upper Franconia and the Upper Palatinate will also extend beyond the region, enabling modern trains to traverse specific routes from December 10. This development will enhance the traffic connections in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria with major cities like Nuremberg and Bayreuth.
