Tommy Fleetwood Falls Short Again at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Tommy Fleetwood, a prominent golfer on the PGA Tour, found himself in a familiar position at the FedEx St. Jude Championship – falling short of a win. Despite holding a 54-hole lead for the second time this year, Fleetwood extended his winless streak on the PGA Tour.

Fleetwood's 2025 season has been his best on the PGA Tour, ranking fourth in total Strokes Gained and eighth in the FedExCup standings. DataGolf ranks him as the fifth-best player worldwide statistically. However, his inability to convert leads into wins has been a recurring issue.

At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Fleetwood opened up a three-shot lead following Round 2 and carried a one-shot lead over Justin Rose into the final round. But a bogey on the first hole of the final round immediately surrendered his lead. Despite a chance to finally get his first PGA Tour victory, Fleetwood only managed a par on the par-5 16th and a bogey on the par-4 17th hole.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose bounced back from a bogey on hole 12 to make four birdies in his last five holes, finishing in a tie with Spaun, both men one shot ahead of Fleetwood. The playoff between Spaun and Rose was intense, with both players lipping out their birdie putts on the first playoff hole and settling for par. This led to a second playoff hole, where the outcome was decided. Rose made a clutch putt on the third playoff hole to secure the victory, while Spaun missed a birdie putt, allowing Rose to claim the win.

Fleetwood's performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship highlights the gap between his overall game quality and his tournament-winning execution. His strong statistical performance in Strokes Gained components such as approach shots and putting contrasts with his struggles to close out wins. This pattern has raised concerns about his mental toughness or ability to perform under pressure, especially on Sundays.

Tommy Fleetwood's career on the PGA Tour is marked by high rankings in Strokes Gained: Total and multiple runner-up finishes. However, he has yet to win a tournament this season, with six second-place and six third-place finishes, along with 29 top-five and 42 top-10 finishes, the most top-fives by any active player without a win. This winless streak has made comparisons to other great athletes who never won a championship, such as Dan Marino in the NFL and Charles Barkley in the NBA.

Despite this setback, Fleetwood will undoubtedly continue to push for his first PGA Tour victory, demonstrating the resilience and determination that has made him one of the best players on the tour.
