Championship Promotion Aimed as Wrexham's Next All-Time Test, Striving to Sustain Fairy Tale Ascendancy

Wrexham Aim High in Championship Debut

Wrexham, Wales' oldest professional football club, are embarking on a new chapter in their history as they compete in the Championship for the first time since the 1981/82 season. After securing an unprecedented three-straight promotions, the team is ready to take on the challenges of the second tier.

The club's management, under Phil Parkinson, has been actively strengthening the squad, recruiting seven new faces and spending £10m so far. Notable arrivals include striker George Thomason, who joined for over £1m, following striker Ryan Hardie through the door. The club has also broken their transfer record twice already this summer, with the signings of Liberato Cacace and Lewis O'Brien for around £4m and just below £3m respectively.

However, the team's performance in the 2022-2023 Championship season has started on a challenging note. With three straight losses, Wrexham are yet to register a win or a draw, showing signs of difficulty in adapting to the league level. This has resulted in predictions of a relegation battle by a Championship supercomputer.

Despite the early setbacks, Wrexham's owners, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, remain ambitious. They have shown commitment to the club's growth by investing in infrastructure, purchasing The Rock stadium for the women's team, and planning to increase STōK Cae Ras’ capacity to 18,000 to support future growth and success.

Regarding transfer activity, the club has faced setbacks, notably in pursuing Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead, who is valued at £7.5 million but ruled out by his current club. However, Wrexham are exploring alternative signings, including targeting a Liverpool player, indicating sustained ambition to enhance their squad.

Wrexham have also secured the services of Conor Cody from Leicester and Kieffer Moore from undisclosed deals worth £2million each. Meanwhile, ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien and Liberato Cacace, who joined from Serie A, have also joined the team.

In addition, Josh Windass and Danny Ward have joined Wrexham as free transfers, while 12 players have been shown the exit door from the club.

As the season progresses, Wrexham are 7/1 favourites to win Championship promotion, while they are 5/2 to secure a top-six finish with talkSPORT BET. The team will undoubtedly be looking to build on their early-season learnings and turn their fortunes around, as they continue their journey towards the Premier League.
