In the thrilling opening matches of the Champions League, several teams showcased their prowess, while others displayed resilience in the face of adversity.

In a repeat of the 1997 Champions League final, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund played out a dramatic 4-4 draw. Dusan Vlahovic equalized for Juventus in the 94th minute, only for Kenan Yildiz to equalize again in the sixth minute of stoppage time, securing a point for both teams. Earlier, Karim Adeyemi and Ramy Bensebaini had scored for Dortmund, with Vlahovic and Lloyd Kelly finding the net for Juventus.

Arsenal secured a hard-fought victory against Athletic Club, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard scoring late goals, the latter with a deflection. Mikel Arteta praised his team's performance, stating they grew throughout the game and were dominant in the second half.

Tottenham Hotspur also claimed a victory, defeating Villarreal 1-0. The winning goal was an own goal by Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior. Thomas Frank's Spurs displayed a solid performance to secure all three points.

Union Saint-Gilloise and Qarabag claimed their first ever victories in the Champions League proper. Union Saint-Gilloise defeated PSV Eindhoven 3-1, while Qarabag, in their first ever match, defeated Maccabi Tel-Aviv 2-0. This is the first time Qarabag have ever won a match in the Champions League proper.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Marseille 2-1. Timothy Weah scored the first goal for Marseille, but Kylian Mbappe equalized with a penalty and then reached 50 goals for Real Madrid with a late goal.

In other news, Igor Tudor was the coach of Juventus in their match against Borussia Dortmund, while Niko Kovač coached Borussia Dortmund. This marks a significant return for Tudor, who last coached Juventus in 2000, and a new chapter for Kovač, who took over from Edin Terzic in the summer.
