Champions League contenders Lille impede Marseille's progress.
In an exhilarating Ligue 1 clash, former champions Marseille and third-placed Lille put on a show, with the encounter ending in a hard-fought draw. The stalemate sees Marseille move one point ahead of Lille, with Nice, Lille, and Strasbourg all closely following behind.
Runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain, with an impressive 19-point advantage and the title already in their grasp, watched from afar as the fight for second place intensified. The top three positions will secure spots in the Champions League proper, while the fourth-place finisher will contest in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
Marseille began the match as the better side, pressing hard for an opening goal in the disappointing first half. Lucas Chevalier made a couple of impressive saves to keep out efforts from Michael Murillo and Adrien Rabiot. However, it was Lille who broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, with Rabiot capitalizing on a promising counter-attack, squaring the ball for Amine Gouiri to tap in his eighth Ligue 1 goal since joining from Rennes in January.
Lille's celebrations were short-lived as the visitors found an equalizer with 15 minutes remaining. A tragic mistake from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli gifted Jonathan David a golden opportunity inside the area, which he didn't hesitate to take advantage of, setting up Matias Fernandez-Pardo to score.
David nearly extended Lille's advantage a couple of minutes later, but a desperate Marseille defense managed to keep the score level. The hosts flung everything at their visitors in the dying minutes of the game, pushing for a winner. Despite their efforts, Lille held on for a crucial point that could prove vital at the end of the season.
Earlier in the day, Lyon's top-four hopes took a blow as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat at home against fellow title challengers Lens. Lyon, currently seventh, now trail fourth-placed Nice by just three points, with two matches remaining.
In a twist of fate, Lens opened the scoring midway through the first half after Lyon failed to deal with a corner. Lyon pressed for an equalizer but struggled to create clear-cut chances until the 79th minute, when Georges Mikautadze headed in an excellent cross from Clinton Mata to bring the hosts level. The visitors snatched all three points in the 85th minute, as substitute Anass Zaroury unleashed a stunning strike from long range into the top corner.
Elsewhere, Le Havre gave their survival bid a boost with a 2-1 win at Auxerre. Le Havre now sit just one point behind both Angers and Nantes as they cling to the relegation play-off spot. Gabon forward Jim Allevinah scored the decisive goal in Angers' 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Nantes.
