Malaysian Men's Doubles Secure Historic Home Victory at Malaysia Masters
In a thrilling turn of events at the Malaysia Masters, the national pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will competing for the men's doubles title against fellow compatriots Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, in an all-Malaysian final set for tomorrow. The victory guarantees Malaysia its first home men's doubles title in 12 years.
The fourth-seeded pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, inspired by the sterling performance of Wei Chong and Kai Wun in the earlier semi-finals, overcame Denmark's top-seeded and defending champions, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in a 64-minute battle at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil.
The Malaysian pair began somewhat shakily, trailing 9-11 at the interval but regrouped to edge ahead 15-14 and held their nerve in the closing moments to claim the opening set dramatically, 21-19. Unfortunately, the world number three pair lost their footing in the second set, struggling to find rhythm and conceding the set to the world number one duo, 17-21.
However, the 2022 world champions fought back resiliently in the decider and took control of the game from the outset, racing to a commanding 9-1 lead en route to a 21-15 victory, thanks to a powerful front shot from Wooi Yik.
This marks the first all-Malaysian men's doubles final in the Malaysia Masters since the victory of Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah in 2013. The much-anticipated final is expected to attract a fervent response from the home fans, marking a proud moment for Malaysian badminton.
The Minister of Youth and Sports will present the medals in a ceremony that underscores the significance of this victory as Malaysia seeks its first men’s doubles title on home soil in over a decade.
