Challenges of Enduring Peace in Ukraine: An Overview
The Russian offensive on Ukrainian territory, which began on February 24, 2022, has been a source of global concern. The war, taking place in Kyiv, a city 8,000 kilometers away from Washington, has scarcely allowed Ukraine to experience days as hopeful.
On August 18, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House, accompanied by a delegation. The conversation between President Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump was more cordial than previous ones, and was hailed as the "best" they'd had.
The summit took place amid a crucial gathering with seven European leaders and NATO. The diplomatic meeting occurred on Monday, following the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska. The European leader who was part of the delegation accompanying President Zelensky was German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders.
The meeting was aimed at ending the devastating war in Kyiv, which was ongoing at the time of the summit. Hours before the White House summit, Russian strikes occurred on Ukrainian soil, resulting in the death of another ten people. The war, however, was not put to an end during the summit.
Since the start of the Russian offensive, Ukraine had scarcely known days as hopeful. The conversation between the Ukrainian president and Donald Trump offered a glimmer of hope, but the war continues to rage on in Kyiv. The international community continues to watch and wait, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict.
