Challenges faced in the path towards a tripartite meeting between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S., a critical examination

In a significant development, President Donald Trump announced plans for a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the location yet to be determined. The meeting, set to take place after negotiations on security guarantees, marks Trump's firmest commitment yet that the U.S. would play a role in guaranteeing Ukraine's security in the event of a peace deal with Russia.

The planned meeting, which took place on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, saw the attendance of European leaders and President Trump. However, there was no confirmed participation of President Zelenskyy in this summit.

German Chancellor Frederich Merz proposed a ceasefire should at least kick in at the moment of a possible trilateral meeting. He also stated that the security guarantees for Ukraine have been the subject of long and intensive discussion. Merz expressed that he was pleased with the outcome of the White House meeting.

European leaders believe the way to get a deal that Ukraine could accept is to pressure Russia further, and they know the U.S. is key in this. No leader used the word "sanctions" during Monday's meeting, but Merz made a thinly veiled reference to them.

Russian officials are sending mixed signals on whether they would accept the idea of European troops being stationed in Ukraine as a deterrent. Putin's demand for all of Ukraine's Donetsk region is a virtual non-starter for Ukraine. If genuine progress is made on the security guarantees, a deal on territory is still way off.

Trump stated that he had already spoken to Putin to set up this meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron backed Merz's concept, while Trump seemed unconvinced. Merz stated that the trilateral meeting may occur within the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has been defending the Donetsk region for 11 years. The sacrifice in defending the Donetsk region has been huge for Ukraine. Finnish President Alexander Stubb described the gathering as "team Europe and team U.S. helping Ukraine."

In an unrelated development, Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is on the verge of erupting again.
