LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Email Print Copy Link With faint echoes of his predecessor, Pope Leo XIV steps into the limelight. While a close connection with the late Pope Francis is rumored, the new Pope will encounter a daunting list of incomplete reforms and thorny issues.

There's no denying the affectionate camaraderie between Prevost and Bergoglio exhibited in the photos—not to mention the folded-hands salute Leo XIV paid to his predecessor during his inaugural address in St. Peter's Square. But with Pope Francis' term marked by unfulfilled hopes and internal strife, the new Pope faces a rocky road ahead.

Agenda Overloaded

Vatican insider Giacomo Galeazzi has outlined the main concerns that await the new Pope in the daily newspaper "La Repubblica": the Vatican's red ink, corruption elimination, synodality, decentralization, and Church de-bureaucratization—alongside abuse prevention, same-sex blessings, and women's diaconate.

These topics have generated significant controversy during Pope Francis' reign, not only among the cardinals, but also among the clergy in obscure African and Asian dioceses.

Finance Fiasco

As the Pope is both the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and the head of the Vatican State, the financial situation demands urgent attention. With an administrative apparatus of 5,000 employees in the Vatican and presence in 189 countries, an annual deficit of approximately 80 million euros looms large.

Despite Francis' salary reductions for the cardinals and his "Zero Deficit" program, progress has been slow. His fundraising commission has made little headway, but the passive of the Vatican pension fund now stands at 650 million euros.

Various factors have contributed to the financial predicament, including poor investments, corruption, and dwindling donations from traditional donor countries such as the United States and Germany.

Another pressing concern is the handling of abuse cases. The Church needs to establish effective measures applicable to all dioceses, but such initiatives have yet to materialize, creating the impression that the Church is shirking its responsibility.

Furthermore, the fate of the Emanuela Orlandi investigation remains shrouded in mystery. The daughter of a Vatican employee went missing on July 22, 1983, and suspicions persist about the Vatican's possible involvement. During Francis' tenure, investigations were launched, with the Vatican's chief prosecutor, Alessandro Diddi, spearheading the effort.

Same-Sex Unions

The Church's stance on same-sex relationships has caused turmoil, with limited exceptions for divorced and remarried individuals to receive communion. The real controversy erupted with the release of the Vatican document "Fiducia Supplicans" in 2023, which allowed blessings for same-sex couples. Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, a German theologian, has been a consistent opponent of these openings, enjoying significant support from African and Asian believers.

Women and the Church

The issue of the diaconate for women has been a contentious topic. Francis had raised hopes, repeatedly emphasizing the importance of entrusting more responsibility to women. During his hospital stay, he appointed Franciscan Sister Raffaella Petrini as head of the Vatican state and Sister Alessandra Smerilli as her deputy. Prior to this, in January of the same year, he had appointed Missionary Sister Simona Brambilla as the prefect of the dicastery for the consecrated life and the apostolic life.

Even though these were steps in the right direction, the diaconate still hasn't come to fruition. Georg Bätzing, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, described it as a fundamental and future-deciding issue.

Shared Ground

Despite differences with Pope Francis, there are shared values between the two leaders. Their backgrounds, rooted in Argentina and Peru, suggest commonalities, particularly in their interpretation of the Gospel. Consequently, Pope Leo XIV may follow in Francis' footsteps, but he is expected to approach these issues pragmatically—a characteristic that reportedly distinguishes him from his predecessor and was instrumental in his election to the Holy See.

  • Sexual AbuseAs Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, he confronts several unfulfilled reforms and contested issues within the Catholic Church. Here are key areas he will need to address:

1. Vatican Finances

The Vatican has faced scrutiny for financial transparency and management, as scandals like the London real estate deal demonstrate. Pope Leo XIV will require implementing reforms to boost financial transparency and governance within the Vatican, potentially through strengthening auditing processes, enhancing financial reporting, and bringing in external expertise.

2. Synodality

Francis initiated a synodal process aiming to make the Church more inclusive and participatory. Moving forward, Pope Leo XIV must continue this process and ensure that it indeed reflects diverse perspectives and leads to meaningful reforms.

3. Abuse Cases

Sexual abuse scandals continue to cast a shadow over the Church. Ongoing efforts to address these cases and prevent future abuses necessitate sustained dedication. Pope Leo XIV will need to enact robust, transparent procedures for handling abuse allegations, and maintain zero tolerance for such crimes within the Church.

4. Same-Sex Couples

The Church's stance on same-sex relationships remains debated. Pope Leo XIV may face mounting pressure to clarify or revisit these teachings through dialogue with various stakeholders within and outside of the Church.

5. The Role of Women in the Church

Advocacy for greater female inclusion in Church leadership roles continues. This includes potentially ordaining women as deacons or creating new roles for them. Pope Leo XIV will be tasked with balancing these demands while staying faithful to traditional teachings.

Given Pope Leo XIV's background as an Augustinian friar and his reputation for humility and approachability, he is expected to prioritize dialogue and inclusivity in addressing these challenges during his papacy.

  1. Pope Leo XIV Inherits Financial Responsibilities: As the new Pope steers the Vatican, he must tackle the financial fiasco, aiming to reduce the annual deficit of approximately 80 million euros and eliminate corruption. The pragmatic approach he is known for may aid financial reform.
  2. Promoting Transparency and Accountability: To repair the Church’s image in the wake of various scandals like the London real estate deal, there is a need for transparency and accountability in the Vatican's finances. This may involve strengthening auditing processes, enhancing financial reporting, and possibly inviting external experts for consultation.
  3. Pursuit of Synodality: Building upon Francis' initiations, Leo XIV must continue the synodal process with a committed focus on inclusivity and active participation of Church members. By fostering a meaningful dialogue and embracing diverse perspectives, he can further the goals of the synodal process.
  4. Ending the Cycle of Abuses: To restore faith in the Church, it is crucial for Pope Leo XIV to establish effective measures to address sexual abuse allegations within Church dioceses. Adopting zero tolerance towards these crimes and implementing robust, transparent procedures for handling abuse cases will be essential.
  5. Debating the Status of Same-Sex Relationships: With growing support for same-sex unions, the Pope may face pressure to address Church teachings concerning these relationships. Pursuing open dialogue and sustained reflection with various stakeholders both within and outside of the Church might lead to a revisiting of the Church's stance.
  6. Advocating for Women's Support and Involvement: The issue of women's diaconate remains contentious. Pope Leo XIV may seek to balance the demands for female inclusions with traditional teachings. As a leader, he may identify opportunities for creating new roles for women within the Church, allowing them to contribute more effectively.

By addressing these challenges with the values and pragmatic approach of humility and inclusiveness, Pope Leo XIV may help heal old wounds and continue Francis’ legacy by building a stronger, more united global community, ultimately serving the best interests of the Catholic Church and its followers.
