Title: Chancellor's Stand on Israel's Actions Against Iran: Balancing Interests Amidst Controversy

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's top aide, Thorsten Frei, has defended the Chancellor's stance in support of Israel's attacks on Iran. In an interview with the German Press Agency, Frei explained, "What the Chancellor meant by his words was that it's in our best interest to ensure that a terrorist regime like the Iranian Mullah regime won't possess nuclear weapons."

It's not just about nuclear weapons, Frei adds. "Iran's rocket technology is alarming, as medium-range rockets can reach targets far beyond European borders. That's why it's crucial we don't ignore these developments," he expressed.

During the G7 summit in Canada, Merz mentioned the Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and leadership personnel, calling them "the dirty work" Israel's doing on our behalf. Critics argued that Merz's word choice was questionable, and his support for the attacks drew further critique.

However, Frei refused to provide a legal assessment regarding the attacks' legitimacy. "We're missing crucial information to make a definitive judgment," he stated. But it's undeniable that Israel launched the attacks due to persistent threats. The Iranian regime has openly expressed its intention to obliterate Israel.

Frei emphasized that Germany remains dedicated to helping Israel maintain its security, before and after the Israeli attacks on Iran. "The federal government has always felt this way, and this commitment remains unchanged," he reassured.

Germany has provided Israel with military support for decades, even in crisis-ridden regions – a practice that only applies to Ukraine currently. Under the new government, military exports worth approximately four million euros have been approved for Israel within the first five weeks of its term. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, which saw an approval of 28 million euros in military supplies for Israel, the current amount is significantly less.

Frei explained that this comparison isn't relevant. "Comparing shorter time periods won't show whether there's a strategy behind it," he clarified to the German Press Agency. "Our stance toward Israel has not shifted because of the federal government."

  • Germany's Military Support: Germany has provided Israel with military support for decades, despite the turbulent nature of the Middle East. However, the extent and nature of Germany's response to the recent attacks on Iran have not been clarified in the available data.
  • Legal Uncertainty: The legality of Israel's attacks on Iran remains unresolved, with opposing arguments and a lack of UN Security Council authorization. This adds complexity to the ongoing debates surrounding the Middle Eastern conflict.

The Chancellor's employment policy has not shifted, despite the controversy surrounding Israel's actions against Iran, as Germany continues to provide military support to Israel in accordance with its employment policy. However, the international community is divided on the legality of Israel's attacks, with some arguing they constitute pre-emptive self-defense under international law while others view them as violations of the UN Charter and war-and-conflicts related regulations. The politics surrounding Israel's actions against Iran continue to be a general news topic of importance, further fueled by the lack of UN Security Council authorization for such military actions.
