Chael Sonnen dismisses McGregor vs. Diaz trilogy as unlikely

A potential trilogy fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz appears unlikely, according to UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen. The former middleweight contender doubts the matchup will happen, even though Diaz has shown interest under certain conditions. McGregor, meanwhile, has been sidelined for nearly five years due to injury and a lengthy doping suspension. McGregor last stepped into the octagon in July 2021, losing to Dustin Poirier. Since then, an 18-month anti-doping ban—lifting on March 20, 2026—has kept him inactive. Sonnen now suggests the Irishman will likely fight just once more in the UFC before shifting focus to boxing.

Diaz, who hasn't competed since 2022, will return on May 16 at an MVP event against Michael Perry. While he previously stated he wouldn't want to be McGregor's comeback opponent, he hasn't ruled out a third fight—if McGregor proves himself in a successful return. Sonnen remains sceptical about the trilogy ever materialising. His comments add to the uncertainty surrounding McGregor's future in MMA, especially as the fighter nears the end of his suspension.

McGregor's next move remains unclear, though Sonnen's prediction points to a single UFC bout before a boxing transition. Diaz's upcoming fight against Perry could further shape his own plans. For now, the long-awaited trilogy seems no closer to reality.
