FC St. Pauli's Commercial Director Wilken Engelbracht is confident in the club's potential to enter the Bundesliga. Faced with financial challenges due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the club needs to raise an additional six million euros annually. Engelbracht believes that non-personnel costs, such as energy and insurance, account for over half of their 62 million euro turnover, leaving room for potential improvements without neglecting the personnel side.

St. Pauli has been struggling with injuries, causing issues with squad stability and performance. Young USMNT international James Sands' season-ending ankle injury is a notable example. The club has even added a fifth goalkeeper to the roster due to injuries. Financially, the club is facing serious consequences if relegated, possibly leading to dissolution. They have requested a license for the 3. Liga but might need to play in the Regionalliga West, the fourth division, if they fail.

St. Pauli currently sits 14th in the Bundesliga with 21 points, barely escaping relegation. Despite their disappointing offensive performance, they possess the second-best defensive record in the division, having only conceded 22 goals. Tactically, head coach Alexander Blessin has been balancing defensive solidity and offensive improvement, with inconsistent away form being a substantial concern.

To improve, St. Pauli needs to address its challenges strategically. This includes:

  1. Better injury management and player care.
  2. Diversifying revenue streams through sponsorship deals, ticket sales, and other opportunities.
  3. Focusing on youth development to improve squad depth.
  4. Tactical adaptation and flexibility for better away performance.

By addressing these concerns and working diligently, FC St. Pauli can pursue its ambition of establishing itself in the Bundesliga. However, their financial struggles and ongoing injuries necessitate careful management and patience.
