Amidst the arrangement, it seems Russia failed to uphold the agreed cease-fire: a residential building in Kostjantyniwka, Ukraine, was shelled by Russia on May 8, resulting in damage.

Russian Stipulations for a Ukraine Ceasefire: The Kremlin's Perspective

Cessation of hostilities shall occur once overseas weapons deliveries come to a halt, according to Kremlin.

In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the Kremlin has articulated certain conditions for a ceasefire to take effect. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, these conditions are primarily aimed at preventing Ukraine from gaining an advantage.

Conditions for a Temporary Ceasefire

Russia has demanded a cessation of weapons deliveries from the United States and EU as a prerequisite for a 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine war. If these deliveries continue, Ukraine, as per Peskov, would allegedly exploit the ceasefire period for "total mobilization," bringing new troops to the front, training fresh personnel, and providing current fighters with a well-deserved break.

The Gains of a Planetary Ceasefire?

What Peskov doesn't make explicit is the potential advantage Russia could also reap from a temporary ceasefire, such as providing its soldiers with some respite and possibly establishing a foothold in key strategic territories.

Skepticism from the Kremlin: A Strategic Shift?

Peskov intimates another reason for Moscow's cautious stance on a ceasefire: the ongoing offensive in Ukraine, and the Kremlin's strategic advantage in the ongoing conflict.

Influence of the US President and International Calls for Negotiations

Peskov also expresses hope that US President Donald Trump will continue to exert his influence on Ukraine, encouraging negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He accuses Ukraine of wanting to avoid negotiations, with both warring parties regularly exchanging accusations regarding their commitment to ending hostilities.

International Support for a Ceasefire and Peace Talks

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other leaders have visited Ukraine, advocating for a 30-day ceasefire and expressing their readiness to support peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Russia is now being called upon to agree to a longer ceasefire, allowing for a genuine peace treaty to be negotiated.

Maintaining Pressure on Moscow and the Path to a Lasting Peace

The EU supports a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, viewed as a means to open discussions and work towards a lasting peace. In case of a ceasefire violation, the EU is prepared to maintain "strong pressure" on Russia and impose "further painful sanctions." The ultimate objective is a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, essential for security and stability across the entire continent.

As the conflict persists, international efforts to impose a ceasefire and encourage negotiations continue, while Russia's strategic position in the ongoing conflict remains a significant factor in the peace process.
