Cerritos Cross Country Team Dominates 605 League Cluster, Securing First Place for Girls, while Whitney Boys Claim Victory
In the world of high school sports, the Southern California region is buzzing with exciting performances and close-fought contests. Here's a roundup of the latest news from the local high school scene.
Football
Norwalk's junior running back Diego Cerritos and senior running back Ezra Meuller have combined for an impressive 780 yards and nine touchdowns. The Lancers will face West Torrance High (1-2) in their next game, a rematch of last season's close contest which Norwalk won 27-21.
Elsewhere, La Mirada High (1-3) is aiming to build on their recent victory, as they prepare to take on La Habra High (3-1). La Habra has been in fine form, with a recent 42-8 win over Orange High.
Mountain View High (1-3) faces a tough challenge against Artesia (4-0), who are enjoying one of their best starts in school history. Artesia's top runner, Genesis Flores, came in fifth place in the recent cross country race.
Linfield Christian High (1-2) will square off against Norwalk (2-1) in a highly anticipated matchup. Last season, Linfield Christian travelled to Temecula and lost to Linfield Christian 22-20 in the only other meeting between the schools.
Cross Country
The Cerritos High girls cross country team started the season with a bang, winning the first 605 League cross country cluster race at Mile Square Park. Four of the seven Cerritos runners claimed the top nine spots in the girls race, with Kalana Nguyen finishing third. Senior Anna Field from Cerritos High was the overall winner, crossing the finish line with a time of 18:45.
Whitney High's boys cross country team put on a strong showing, winning the race by five points over Cerritos. In the boys race, Whitney junior Christian Ishiki and Whitney senior Ethan Choi took home the top two spots with times of 17:03 and 17:21, respectively. Whitney had four more runners finish in the top 20.
La Quinta (3-0) has been impressing on the track as well, with five players over 100 yards rushing this season. They will face Glenn (1-2) in their next game. Glenn was blanked by University High out of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section 6-0 last week.

Valley Christian's senior quarterback Austin Abrahams is 47 of 68 for 764 yards and six touchdowns this season. Valley Christian's junior running back Karsen Wesley is the only other running back to gain over 100 yards.
Linfield Christian's quarterback Thomas Paschal completed 16 of 31 passes for 137 yards to six different receivers in their recent game.
On defense, junior Cole Hefner has three and a half sacks for La Mirada, one of six players who have at least one of the team's 11 sacks.
Artesia High defeated Ocean View High 14-13 last Friday, with senior quarterback Charlie Lopez putting in a stellar performance. Norwalk didn't play last Friday but has been outscored 134-26 this season.
Mountain View has lost three straight games by a combined score of 95-19, including last Friday's 42-12 setback to La Quinta High. Sierra Vista High has been outscored 134-26 this season and lost to Baldwin Park High 40-8 last Friday.
West Torrance lost to rival North Torrance High 40-30, a week after dismantling Santa Monica High 30-6.
