Cerritos Cross Country Girls Secure First Win in 605 League Cluster with Uncontested Success, Whitney Boys claim Victory

The first 605 League cross country cluster race took place on Sept. 11 at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, and it was a successful outing for Cerritos High and Artesia High.

In the girls race, the Cerritos High team claimed an impressive victory, with four of their runners taking the top nine spots. Anna Field, a senior from Cerritos High, was the overall winner with a time of 18:45. Kalana Nguyen, a sophomore from Cerritos High, finished third with a time of 21:21, while Daisy Lee, another sophomore, came in sixth with a time of 22:05. Nandini Panchal, another Cerritos High runner, finished ninth with a time of 22:49.

Whitney High put up a strong challenge, with sophomore Katherine Low finishing second with a time of 21:05 and freshman Madison Lee coming in seventh with a time of 22:25. Artesia High's top runner, sophomore Genesis Flores, came in fifth place with a time of 21:56.

The boys race was a close affair, with Whitney High securing a five-point margin over Cerritos High. Whitney senior Ethan Choi was the overall winner with a time of 17:03, while Cerritos High's top runner, whose name is not specified, finished second.

On the football field, there were several notable matches. Cerritos (3-1) will play West Torrance High (1-2) in a football game, a rematch of last season's game where Cerritos got past West Torrance 27-21. Mountain View High (1-3) will play Artesia (4-0) in a football game. Artesia edged Ocean View High 14-13 in their last football game.

Mountain View has lost three straight games by a combined score of 95-19, while Artesia has had a mixed bag of results, with a 46-6 loss to Mayfair High, a shutout win against Paramount High, and a close loss to Savanna High. This is Artesia's homecoming game.

In other football action, La Mirada High (1-3) will play La Habra High (3-1) in a game. La Habra has been improving, culminating in a 42-8 win over Orange High last Friday. Los Altos High (1-2) will play Gahr High (2-2) in a game. Gahr had one of the biggest shutouts in the brief two-year existence of flag football, defeating Whitney 64-0 this past Monday, but then fell to La Mirada High in their Gateway League opener.

Meanwhile, Norwalk (3-0) will face Linfield Christian High (1-2) in a game. Norwalk has scored 11 touchdowns this season, with 780 yards rushing, while Linfield Christian's losses have been close, by a point to Christian High out of San Diego and Dimond High out of Anchorage, Alaska.

The next cluster meet will be held on Oct. 9, while the next Cross Country Cluster Championship will take place in 2025, but the exact date and location are not specified in the search results.

In the meantime, Valley Christian High (4-0) will face Sierra Vista High (0-3) in a football game. Valley Christian's senior quarterback Austin Abrahams has completed 47 of 68 passes for 764 yards and 6 touchdowns this season. Glenn (10-4, 4-1) will host Whitney on Friday and Oxford Academy on Tuesday. Glenn lost to Norwalk 25-14 this past Monday and has lost three games in a row to fall to 1-7.

Last week was to have been the Mayor's Cup game with Norwalk High, which was canceled.
