Central Valley prepares as two-day storm brings flooding and landslide risks

The Central Valley braces for a two-day storm, with showers already hitting Coarsegold. Fresno's Flood Control District is ready, capable of handling up to half an inch of rain per hour. Meanwhile, Madera County agencies coordinate to prevent landslides in burned areas, and utility companies prepare for potential outages.

Fresno's Public Works Director warns of local flooding during intense storms. The city's Flood Control District can manage up to a half inch of rain within an hour. In Madera County, agencies like the California Department of Transportation and local public safety, environmental, and land management authorities work together to monitor and manage landslides and earth movement in burned vegetation areas. Their efforts focus on erosion control, slope stabilization, and rapid response to mitigate landslide risks. Visalia crews have cleared drains and maintained creeks ahead of the storm. Madera County Sheriff's Office will monitor burn scars for potential landslides and soil movement. PG&E has provided its crews with rest periods to prepare for potential outages, expecting consecutive days of 'moderate' rain.

Residents can access sandbag locations through Madera County's website and mobile app. Fresno residents can report downed trees or street flooding through the FresGo app.

The first of two storms is expected to linger into Monday, bringing showers to the region. Local flooding may occur during intense storms. Agencies and utility companies are prepared, with coordination and preventive measures in place to ensure safety and manage potential issues.
