Jörg Heidermann warns that the weather in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia will take a turn for the worse once again from Wednesday. Last weekend's thunderstorms in Mitteldeutschland resulted in a bit of chaos, especially in Thuringia, with heavy rainfall causing mudslides and aquaplaning. Thankfully, no major damages were reported.

boring stuff alert 😴☔️🌪️

Now for the juice: After the weekend thunderstorms, it'll get "quite unstable, weather-wise" again in the middle of the week, as Jörg puts it. After a decent start to the day, clouds from the southwest will roll in, and rain could start as early as in Thuringia. By midday, thunderstorms will develop, primarily in Saxony, with parts of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia in the throes of it too. If you're in the path of these storms, things could get wild - Jörg warns of potential hail, heavy rain, and gusty winds. But don't worry, it should all settle down in the evening. Showery conditions and more thunderstorms are expected around Pentecost.

The German Weather Service (DWD) concurs, predicting severe thunderstorms in parts of eastern Germany. Expect intense thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and strong gusts of wind in a strip running from the middle to the east. In some areas, the weather could get pretty nasty.

Last Weekend's Stormy Shenanigans

Last Sunday, Mitteldeutschland was pelted with thunderstorms, and things got chaotic especially in Thuringia. There were multiple emergency calls to the fire department and a mudslide in Buttelstedt in the Weimarer Land due to heavy rain. Fire departments had to pump water from cellars, and several trees were uprooted along the B90. Other federal roads were temporarily closed due to flooding, and in Weimar, a woman was lightly injured when a branch fell on her. Furthermore, the small town of Eisfeld in the Thuringian Forest experienced heavy rainfall, and there were even issues with aquaplaning.

It wasn't all doom and gloom though. Saxony also caught a piece of the storm. The Großpösna area near Leipzig started with strong gusts of wind, with meteorologists forecasting follow-up thunderstorms later in the evening.

A Wet Night Over the Weekend

The German Weather Service (DWD) had warned for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia overnight Saturday into Sunday about heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 liters per square meter. But the storms turned out to be less severe than expected, and major damages were avoided.

Striking a Spark: Artern's Blazing Fire

In the Thuringian town of Artern in the Kyffhäuser district, a lightning strike sparked a fire in a single-family home's attic. The residents were spared injury, but the damage was estimated at 150,000 euros.

Magdeburg and Halle reported no significant events or deployments due to the weather overnight.

Flooding in the West

Things weren't quite as tranquil in western Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, many sites required emergency responses due to flooded basements, fallen trees, or flooded roads. In Krefeld, there were even instances where the water was reportedly half a meter high, and many basements were flooded. The town of Herrig, with around 500 residents, was temporarily without power.
