Central Bedfordshire set to receive £200 million in road construction funding, anticipated to stimulate local economic growth

In the heart of Bedfordshire, two significant infrastructure projects, the A5-M1 Link and the Woodside Link, have been completed and are reaping substantial benefits for the region. These projects, which opened to the public in May 2017 and autumn 2016 respectively, aim to alleviate traffic congestion, stimulate economic growth, and enhance connectivity.

The A5-M1 Link, a £162 million, 2.8-mile scheme, connects the A5 north of Dunstable to the M1 at a new junction 11a. The project, delivered by Highways England, has diverted traffic away from town centers, helping reduce congestion and improve traffic flow through Dunstable and Houghton Regis. The Highways Agency detrunked the A5 through Dunstable following the opening of this link.

The Woodside Link, a £38 million, 1.8-mile project, is the work of Central Bedfordshire Council. This development connects the new junction 11a to the industrial areas of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, supporting the economic growth of the area by enhancing connectivity to industrial zones. The Woodside Link project has also attracted new businesses to the area.

These projects have not only improved infrastructure but have also brought about significant changes. By reducing traffic congestion, they have contributed to a smoother flow of traffic, both for long-distance and local commuters. The improved infrastructure supports local businesses and industries by providing faster and more reliable access routes.

Moreover, the completion of these projects aligns with broader infrastructure development plans in the region, enhancing overall connectivity and economic vitality. They are expected to unlock up to 40 hectares of land for businesses and provide infrastructure for 7,000 homes to be built north of Houghton Regis.

Both projects, key parts of Bedfordshire's long-term economic plan, are celebrating their first year milestone this spring. For the latest information and updates about these schemes, residents and businesses can visit the respective websites or contact the Highways England Customer Contact Centre or Central Bedfordshire Council.

Roads Minister Andrew Jones stated that these projects are important for economic growth in Bedfordshire and are part of a £15 billion national investment to improve roads. The A5-M1 Link project includes the building of 6 new bridges, and the Woodside Link project, upon completion, will reduce congestion on local roads and improve air quality.

Local communities will see pressure easing on their local roads as more traffic will be using the new routes. As Cllr Nigel Young, Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Regeneration at Central Bedfordshire Council, stated, "these projects will bring significant improvements in journey time reliability and safety for long-distance and local traffic."

The HRN1 development, a part of the A5-M1 Link, will bring 130,500m2 gross of employment land and is expected to deliver over 5,000 new jobs. The HRN1 development is contributing £45 million to help deliver the A5-M1 Link Road.

In conclusion, the A5-M1 Link and Woodside Link projects have made a substantial impact on Bedfordshire's infrastructure and economy. They have not only improved traffic flow and reduced congestion but have also stimulated economic growth and provided opportunities for business start-ups. These projects are a testament to the government's commitment to improving roads and boosting the economy nationwide.

The improved traffic flow on the A5-M1 Link and Woodside Link has allowed local residents to enjoy less congestion, making sports activities more accessible during both good and poor weather conditions. Moreover, the economic growth stimulated by these projects is expected to attract more sports facilities and clubs to the area, contributing to a more active community.
