The unfortunate event occurred on Ryesgade, a popular shopping street in Aarhus. The building's occupants were swiftly evacuated upon the alert, and the police reported no major injuries.
East Jutland Police quickly responded to the scene just before 9 am, with communications officer Anne Tidemann confirming, "The report was that a concrete structure between two floors has collapsed." Some of the building's occupants had to escape through windows, as per the spokesperson's statement just before 10 am.
Initial reports noted that everyone who had been in the building was evacuated, and emergency services immediately secured the site to ensure no one remained trapped. The incident caused the temporary closure of Sønder Allé street, which connects the Aarhus Central Station's front entrance with the city's long-distance bus terminal. Ryesgade was also closed between Sønder Allé and Rosenkrantzgade.
A witness on the scene shared her account with local media, TV 2 Østjylland, stating she saw people calling for help from windows before helping them escape. Fortunately, a partial collapse of the building's floors was avoided.
As of Thursday morning, the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear. Built in 1888, the building stands tall with four storeys, featuring retail units on the bottom level and apartments above.
