Celebratory dance for Tom Evans as ultrarunner secures another UTMB triumph
Ultra Runner Tom Evans Triumphs at UTMB Tenerife
Just two short months after shattering the Arc of Attrition course record, ultrarunner Tom Evans graced the UTMB World Series podium again! This time, he dominated the 14th UTMB Tenerife, traversing a 110k (68-mile) course through Teide National Park's volcanic landscapes.
Crossing the finish line in Puerto de la Cruz, Evans clocked in at 12:32:20, securing a comfortable victory of over 45 minutes ahead of Spain's Manuel Alexis Martin Lorenzo and an hour before third-place finisher, Jean-François Cauchon of Canada.
So exhilarated was the former British army captain with his performance, a mere one-minute eight-second rest time on the course, that he paused just before the finish line to perform a victory dance, before continuing on and saluting at the finish line.
"This island is truly special. The people are fantastic, and the scenery is breathtaking. I had such an incredible journey and adventure today," gushed Evans, who admitted that it was his first trip to the Spanish island.
Seemingly back in prime form after a rocky few seasons, Evans placed third in the UTMB finals in 2022, followed by a second place at Black Canyon then winning both the UTMB Snowdonia and Western States in 2023[1]. However, he faced two disheartening DNFs (Did Not Finish) in the UTMB finals in 2023 and 2024, and a traumatic mugging at knife-point in South Africa during a training run between those races.
At the beginning of the year, he signed a new deal with Asics, and just two days later, he became the first runner to break the seven-hour barrier at the UK's Arc of Attrition. Those new Gel Trabuco Max shoes seem to be paying off.
In the women's race, Spain's Estel Roig Fortin took first place in 15:16:32, with Latvia's Linda Boldane and Switzerland's Mélanie Delasoie following closely. South Africa's Toni McCann triumphed in the 24k race, exclaiming on Instagram, "20k races don't get enough credit. That was tough!"
The demanding course presented runners with no less than 20,862ft of elevation gain (6,359m), taking them from the coast via volcanic peaks and rock formations, to a steep descent through pine forests back to the sea. Bitter windchill conditions were predicted for the higher elevations during the race.
This year, the UTMB Tenerife was the latest race from the series to be streamed live, with the next one on the schedule set for UTMB Australia on May 17. For the full 2025 UTMB live schedule, check out our article on UTMB live.
