Celebration of the 20-year anniversary of the Municipal Job Centre in Wiesbaden, Hesse

In a celebration held on August 21, 2021, the Communal Job Centers in Hesse marked their 20th anniversary. The event, organised by the heads of the Communal Job Centers, Communal Peak Associations, and the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth, and Social Affairs, was a testament to the centres' resilience and innovation over the past two decades.

The journey began in 2001 when some municipalities, including Wiesbaden, took on the responsibility of providing employment services, leading to the creation of the Optionsmunicipalities. Wiesbaden, in particular, took on the care of around 9,000 additional benefit recipients from unemployment assistance at the time.

State Minister Heike Hofmann praised the Hessian municipalities for their role in the Communal Job Centers, stating that Hesse is not only the number one option state but also the driving force behind a nationwide development that sets standards. Hofmann highlighted that no other federal state has as many municipalities in the option as Hesse, making it the leading Optionsland and a pioneer nationwide.

The introduction of the SGB II in 2005 merged unemployment and social assistance, paving the way for the Communal Job Centers to provide comprehensive services. Projects like the Fachstelle Jugendberufshilfe, 'local family services', and 'job seeker days' demonstrate what municipal responsibility can achieve.

Dr. Patricia Becher, the Social Affairs Commissioner, acknowledged the success of the Communal Job Centers over the past 20 years. She attributed the success to the dedication of their employees and emphasised the need for reliable framework conditions, timely funding allocation, and less bureaucracy for the Communal Job Centers to shape the future.

Today, there are 104 communal job centers nationwide, with 16 in Hesse. The Communal Job Center Wiesbaden has since developed into a significant driver of innovation. Hofmann concluded that the decision to have municipalities in the option was right and a good choice.

Looking forward, the transition to the Bürgergeld in 2023 was a logical continuation of individual promotion and more trust in the Communal Job Centers. Hofmann pointed out that municipal proximity, competence, and responsibility are a real chance for integration, participation, and social cohesion.

Dr. Becher emphasised that the Communal Job Centers have navigated change, reforms, and social upheavals, repeatedly demonstrating their innovative prowess. She expressed hope that this trend would continue in the future, ensuring that the Communal Job Centers remain at the forefront of employment services in Hesse and beyond.
